Cheechako means tenderfoot in Alaska. The author signed a one year contract with the Fourth Army Defense Command to work at Anchorage and Nome, Alaska during W.W. II ,1943-1944. The Japanese were still on Alaska soil when she sailed from Seattle, on the old S. S. Alaska.
